Ballestas Islands
The Ballestas Islands are part of the National Reserve System of Islands, Islets, and Guano Points (RNSIIPG), established by Supreme Decree No. 024-2009-MINAM. The purpose of this reserve is to conserve the biodiversity and marine ecosystems of the cold sea of the Humboldt Current. It is composed of 22 islands, islets, and guano points, stretching from Piura to Moquegua, covering 140,833.47 hectares. The islands are important as a guano deposit and a key place for observing wildlife such as guano birds, Humboldt penguins, and sea lions.
