Sanctuary of the Lord of Luren

The Sanctuary of the Lord of Luren, located in Ica, was built in the 16th century in a neo-Romanesque style, with a Latin cross layout and three brick-arched portals. It houses the image of the Lord of Luren, the patron saint of the city, whose festivities and processions were declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation. According to historical research, the image dates back to 1556, when the encomendero Nicolás de Rivera commissioned the construction of a chapel to evangelize the indigenous people of the area. The original image, a small and deteriorated crucified Christ, was replaced by a larger one brought from Europe in 1570 after being rescued from the sea. Over time, the chapel became a sanctuary, which was rebuilt after the 2007 earthquake. The Lord of Luren festivity, held in March and October, is an important religious and cultural event for the community.
