The Canyon of the lost is located southwest of the district of Santiago, in the sector called Montegrande, province of Ica, department of Ica Peru. It has an extension of 5 km and is located 40 km from the town of Ocucaje. It was discovered in 2011. The canyon is formed by the erosion of the Seco River that flows into the Ica River. In the middle of the canyon there is a lagoon.

The Canyon is formed almost at the end of the old bed of the “Seco River” or “Riachuelo” at its mouth with the Ica River, towards the Peruvian Sea, in the small “Chilcatay” sector.

Why the name Canyon of the Lost?

The name of the Canyon of the Lost arose from a visit made by Mayor Pablo Alvites together with some residents and the journalist Maycol Herrera Benavides. They got lost, but in the end they managed to reach the aforementioned canyon and the journalist Maycol Herrera decided to title it. this report as the “Canyon of the Lost” and from then on it is called this way.

What is the way to get to the Canyon of the Lost?

1.Access the Canyon of the Lost independently:

The Canyon of the Lost is located 90 kilometers from the city of Ica, which will take approximately 2 hours. Starting from the city, you must take the South Pan-American Highway and, when you reach kilometer 339, you will find a detour to the right that leads to the Callango district in Ica. From this point, follow an unpaved road that will take you to Boca del Río, following the left bank of Callango.

Get to the Canyon of the Lost with an organized tour:

The tour begins with pickup at the Ica main square or your hotel in the center of Ica and then heads to Ocucaje. First of all, you will visit a small square where you can take fun photos with a “Megalodon” sculpture. Then, you can visit the Paleontological Museum and, finally, you will reach the Canyon of the Lost, where you can take impressive photos and descend through this enormous crevasse. At the end of the tour you will visit the Artisan Winery in Los Aquijes.
